Merry Christmas to ALL Veterans!
This months Veterans Forum Program continues its salute to WWII Veterans as the 70th Anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the USA entrance into WWII quickly approaches. We have a program with Vintage WWII Aircraft that took place at the Bremerton Airport a few years back. Those who appreciate the restoration of these fine examples of WWII Aircraft will appreciate all the work The Collins Foundation has provided in making these planes fly all over the country to educate the public. We were fortunate to have two WWII Veterans who were attending this Air Show, that were Army Air Corp Men. Both Wayne Gilbert and Hollis Knight shared their exciting stories.
Also, included in the Salute to WWII, is a program I have titled, WWII Women Veterans Quilt. Why "Quilt?" This is, I believe the first release of a VF program where segments through the years & various location were 'quilted' together First we have Ruth Turvey who was taped at Capitol Community TV is Salem, OR, who was a Marine. Then Fern Burkholder, a WAC, who was taped in VF early days (using VHS) at American Legion, Post 30 in Port Orchard, WA, I was particularly surprised at the job Fern had during this time period. Third is WAC, Ruth Thomas, who was originally taped for a Mother's Day program a few years ago at American Legion, Post 30. Last was an interview done at Bainbridge Island TV with Navy CDR (Ret) Lorri Gilchrist who brought pictures of her Mother, Polly, who was Navy Nurse during WWII & served 6 years. It is rather unusual for a woman Vet to have a mother who was also a Vet. More unique still, is Polly Gilchrist was the American Legion Post Commander in Sequim, WA and years later Lorri would follow in her Mothers footsteps & become Post Commander at the same Post!
